Africa World Airlines unveils first Embraer E190 as part of 10-aircraft fleet expansion

Africa World Airlines (AWA) has revealed its inaugural Embraer E190 aircraft as part of a 10-aircraft expansion plan, with the aim of bolstering air connectivity in Ghana and West Africa. The aircraft, unveiled at Accra International Airport under the theme "Expanding Horizons, Elevating West African Connectivity," boasts 102 seats, including 14 premium economy and 88 economy.

AWA's CEO, Luolin Cui, emphasized that the new aircraft signifies a fresh chapter for the airline and supports its goal of broadening regional operations. Cui stated that every aircraft should embody a sense of Ghanaian pride. This E190 marks the first of 10 aircraft scheduled for the fleet expansion, which is anticipated to enhance connectivity throughout the sub-region.

AWA's workforce is predominantly Ghanaian, with the airline having transported over five million passengers since its inception in 2012. However, domestic aviation in Ghana confronts significant hurdles, such as high operating costs stemming from the heavy reliance on imported inputs, foreign exchange expenses, and customs duties.

Yvonne Botchey, Executive Chairman of AWA, explained that these factors, coupled with limited passenger numbers and restricted airport operating hours, impact aircraft utilization and the profitability of domestic airlines. Despite these challenges, AWA recently paid its first dividend after a 13-year operational history, underscoring the complexity of running an airline in the country.

Botchey expressed optimism about AWA's long-term presence in the industry. President John Dramani Mahama's government is concurrently investing in aviation infrastructure to expand capacity and enhance connectivity. Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe announced the construction of a connecting concourse between Terminals 2 and 3 at Kotoka International Airport, streamlining transfers between domestic, regional, and international flights.

Infrastructure development is also underway at Bolgatanga, Wa, and Sunyani airports, while Kumasi International Airport's runway is being expanded to accommodate larger aircraft. Additionally, the government is extending operating hours at certain airports as part of its efforts to foster a 24-hour economy. Domestic airlines are encouraged to incorporate recent government measures, such as the exemption of duties on aircraft spare parts, into their pricing strategies.
