Africa World Airlines unveils first Embraer E190 as part of 10-aircraft fleet expansion

Africa World Airlines (AWA) unveiled its inaugural Embraer E190 aircraft at Accra International Airport, highlighting a 10-aircraft fleet expansion plan aimed at enhancing air connectivity in Ghana and West Africa. The 102-seat aircraft, introduced under the theme "Expanding Horizons, Elevating West African Connectivity," accommodates 14 premium economy and 88 economy passengers.

AWA's Chief Executive, Luolin Cui, emphasized that the aircraft symbolized a new chapter for the airline and underscored the importance of representing Ghanaian pride. The E190 marks the first of 10 aircraft planned for the expansion, which is expected to bolster regional connectivity.

AWA's Managing Director, Yvonne Botchey, on behalf of Executive Chairman Tobe Afede XIV, acknowledged the substantial challenges faced by Ghana's domestic aviation sector. These challenges include high operating costs due to reliance on imported inputs, fluctuating foreign exchange rates, customs duties, limited passenger numbers, and restricted airport operating hours.

Despite these hurdles, AWA paid its first dividend after 13 years of operations, illustrating the significant struggle in running an airline in the country. Botchey affirmed, "AWA has come to stay."

Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe, representing President John Dramani Mahama, announced government investments in aviation infrastructure to enhance capacity and connectivity. This includes the construction of a connecting concourse between Terminals 2 and 3 at Kotoka International Airport, streamlining transfers between domestic, regional, and international flights.

Additionally, infrastructure development is underway at Kotoka International Airport in Bolgatanga, Wa, and Sunyani, while the runway at Kumasi International Airport is being expanded to accommodate larger aircraft. The government is also extending airport operating hours to support the 24-hour economy. Nikpe urged domestic airlines to reflect recent government measures, such as the waiver of duties on aircraft spare parts, in their pricing strategies.
