Yankees Notes: Jazz Chisholm Jr. to return during final homestand, Ryan Weathers unlikely to pitch before playoffs

Yankees manager Aaron Boone provided injury updates prior to Friday's series opener against the Diamondbacks in Arizona. The team will activate Jazz Chisholm Jr. soon, as he is expected to return during the Yankees' final homestand starting Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Chisholm has been hitting well before his thumb sprain in late September, with a .375/.464/.500 batting line over his last seven games and a .715 OPS.

His return could impact roster decisions, particularly concerning second base, where Anthony Volpe has been playing almost regularly.

Ryan Weathers, the left-handed pitcher, is unlikely to pitch before the end of the regular season due to a left forearm flexor strain sustained in late August. Despite making progress, there isn't enough time left in the season for him to contribute on the mound before the playoffs. Boone mentioned that Weathers will have another side session on Saturday, which could determine if he is ready for the postseason.

Trent Grisham, the veteran outfielder, is nearing a return as well. Boone said Grisham is "pretty far" into his running progression and is doing well. If Grisham can be activated before the season's end, Boone will have to manage the roster again, as Spencer Jones and Heliot Ramos have been playing regularly in place of Grisham.

Grisham was placed on the IL on September 5 due to a right hamstring strain, the same injury he suffered in June. If he returns during the Yankees' final homestand, he could face right-handed pitchers more often, given Judge's injury. With a .211/.308/.395 batting line in 121 games so far this season, Grisham is a valuable asset as the team prepares for the playoffs.
