Western regional security council steps into Betterland-Gwira mining dispute

The Western Regional Security Council has stepped in to mediate a heated dispute over Betterland Ghana Limited's mining operations near Gwira Banso in the Nzema East Municipality. Representatives from the mining firm, local leaders, and community members convened to discuss the impacts of potential large-scale mining on the local environment and economy.

Concerns were raised about the Draw River Forest and livelihoods, while supporters argued the area could benefit from the jobs and development that large-scale mining would bring. The meeting exposed deep divisions within the community, with some praising Betterland's presence and others opposing it, fearing it would stifle illegal mining activities.

Betterland's Community Relations and Security Coordinator, Samuel Awudzah, confirmed the company has the necessary permits to operate, but the company has not yet begun commercial mining. The Forestry Commission, Environmental Protection Agency, and Minerals Commission are monitoring the situation. The Paramount Chief of the Gwira Traditional Council supports Betterland's presence, citing the need for investment and job creation.

However, he also accused some opponents of opposing the company to protect their illegal mining interests. The community's support for Betterland extends to young people who believe the company can create sustainable employment opportunities. Betterland has prioritized local hiring, with about 80 percent of its expanded exploration team being from the community.
