US clears $2.7 billion Ukraine arms package to bolster air defences

The US State Department has recently approved a potential $2.68 billion military sale to Ukraine, primarily aimed at upgrading the country's air-defence capabilities amidst ongoing Russian attacks. This announcement was made late on Friday and highlights the need for stronger security support from allied nations as Russia's invasion of Ukraine enters its fifth year.

The proposed sale comes during a time when US-mediated talks to end Russia's full-scale invasion have hit a dead end, with territorial concessions in eastern Ukraine remaining a persistent hurdle in negotiations. Furthermore, Ukraine is actively seeking security guarantees from its partners as part of any possible settlement to the conflict.

The news of the arms package arrived amidst continuous Russian attacks across Ukraine. In the Zhytomyr region, two people were killed and two others injured by overnight strikes that triggered fires at warehouses and production facilities. In the Kharkiv region, a Russian drone strike on an electric train resulted in the deaths of one person and injuries to six others. Another drone attack in Zaporizhzhia destroyed a shopping complex and injured one person.

Russian forces have also targeted Ukrainian ports, vessels, and a military logistics center. They claimed to have struck a bulk carrier at the port of Chornomorsk and a Nova Poshta logistics facility near Odesa, which was allegedly used for storing and distributing military cargo from Europe.

In response to these ongoing attacks, the US arms clearance also comes as Ukraine receives additional financial aid from European partners. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Kyiv has received a 3.3 billion-euro tranche, valued at approximately $3.8 billion, as part of an EU support package designed to bolster defence capabilities, including the procurement of missiles and drones.
