US approves potential US$2.7bil air defence sale to Ukraine

The United States has granted approval for a potential $2.68 billion sale of air defense equipment to Ukraine, following intense Russian attacks on the country's capital, Kyiv. The State Department's congressional notification revealed that the decision was made after Kyiv repeatedly requested assistance to counter the relentless assaults.

The State Department stated that the sale would involve air defense development upgrades, along with a range of related equipment and services. Kyiv's request encompassed various types of missiles, launchers, counter-drone radars, and trailers, according to the department. The proposed deal will be contingent on congressional review.

If the purchase is finalized, Ukraine intends to cover the cost through a blend of European contributions and Foreign Military Financing from the previous administration. The projected total expense amounts to $2.68 billion.
