UN/ Director of the International Organizations Department at MOFA: Qatar continues to strengthen strategic partnership with UN, support multilateral action

His Excellency Sheikha Hanouf bint Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Director of the International Organizations Department at Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that Qatar's involvement in the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session reflects Qatar's commitment to multilateral action and international cooperation. She affirmed that the UN serves as a crucial platform for global dialogue and consultation, and that Qatar's participation extends beyond expressing national perspectives to fostering strategic partnerships and advancing initiatives that bolster collective responses to political, humanitarian, and development challenges.

The Director explained that Qatar's partnership with the United Nations has grown substantially over recent years, characterized by strategic dialogue, cooperation frameworks, joint agreements, increased financial contributions, joint program implementation, and the hosting of major international conferences. This partnership is further solidified by the opening of the United Nations House in Doha in 2023, which houses 14 UN offices and enhances coordination, expertise exchange, and support for UN work in Qatar and the region.

2025 marks a significant milestone in this partnership with the UNGA hosting the Second World Summit for Social Development, leading to the adoption of the Doha Political Declaration, which reaffirmed global commitments to poverty eradication, decent work promotion, social protection, social inclusion, and inclusive development.

In December 2025, Qatar also hosted the 11th session of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption, demonstrating its dedication to international cooperation, institutional capacity strengthening, accountability, the rule of law, and anti-corruption efforts.

Her Excellency emphasized that supporting Least Developed Countries (LDCs) is a core element of Qatar's partnership with the UN, illustrated by a USD 60 million pledge to the Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries for the Decade 2022-2031, which is now being realized through practical initiatives addressing structural challenges in LDCs.

The High-Level Comprehensive Midterm Review of this program, scheduled for March 2027 in Doha, will be crucial for assessing progress, identifying ongoing issues, and accelerating implementation in the latter half of the decade.

Al-Thani reiterated that Qatar's partnership with the UN mirrors the nation's foreign policy priorities, including supporting international peace and security, mediation, preventive diplomacy, humanitarian action, sustainable development, and promoting international dialogue. Qatar has consistently utilized the UN's institutional mechanisms, especially during the Iranian attacks against Qatari territory, by keeping the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council informed of developments.

The ongoing 81st UNGA session occurs at a critical juncture for the UN, marked by global geopolitical shifts, institutional reforms under the UN80 initiative, and preparations for a leadership transition.
