Qatar and the UN: A longstanding partnership supporting peace and development

In 1971, Qatar joined the United Nations, sparking a long-standing partnership that focuses on peace, development, and multilateral cooperation. For five decades, Qatar and the UN have collaborated on various humanitarian and conflict resolution efforts, establishing a strong presence in UN activities and regional groups. The UN regards Qatar as a dependable and active partner, not only as a donor but as a diplomatic mediator promoting peace and prosperity worldwide.

This strategic partnership goes beyond formal agreements, encompassing mediation, humanitarian support, and education, health, and sustainable development programs. Over the past two decades, Qatar has built relationships with various UN bodies and agencies, reinforcing its role in addressing global crises, such as poverty, displacement, climate change, and education disparities.

Qatar's international cooperation strategy supports sustainable development goals, including economic and social development in low-income countries. The majority of Qatari aid targets these nations, emphasizing the least developed countries and disaster-affected populations. The aid spans sectors like health, education, water, and sanitation, with significant contributions to education through the Education Above All Foundation.

This foundation has provided education to millions of out-of-school children, trained over 3.3 million young people, and supported educational skills development for over a million community members.

Qatar's commitment to education was further solidified in 2023 when the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 74/275, designating September 9 as the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, spearheaded by HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser. This initiative underscores Qatar's dedication to protecting education and fostering peace in conflict zones.
