UAE, Philippines discuss stronger defence and security cooperation

Dubai: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Philippines recently held discussions to enhance their defense and security cooperation. Both nations underscored the significance of ongoing dialogue and collaboration in tackling the evolving security challenges both regionally and globally. Philippine Secretary of National Defense Gilberto Teodoro met with the UAE's non-resident attaché to the Philippines, Colonel Ahmed Saeed Ali Alramli Alketbi, during an introductory call at Manila's Department of National Defense.

Accompanying Alketbi were UAE Ambassador to the Philippines Mohamed Obaid Alzaabi and UAE Counsellor Musabbeh Said Humaid Binsumait Al Ali. The meeting addressed the intricate security landscape in the Middle East, with both sides emphasizing the need for cooperation and open communication to tackle interconnected challenges that have broader global consequences.

Philippine Defense Secretary Teodoro highlighted the importance of "collective resilience" alongside defense and security cooperation in maintaining peace and stability in the region. The discussions also highlighted the increasing importance of coordination between the UAE and the Philippines as they aim to expand their bilateral defense relationship.

The talks followed the signing of a memorandum of understanding on defense cooperation between the two countries, which lays the groundwork for enhanced collaboration in areas such as military education and training, defense industry collaboration, and the joint production of defense equipment. Both sides reiterated their commitment to the defense cooperation agreement and their intention to implement it, while also strengthening practical cooperation under the deal.

The memorandum was signed during Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s official visit to the UAE in January. The latest meeting is part of efforts to build upon this agreement and further expand cooperation in defense training, education, and industry, while maintaining ongoing dialogue on regional and international security matters.

Both the UAE and the Philippines have plans to explore new avenues for cooperation during the upcoming Abu Dhabi Dialogue.
