Trump claims 'infinite' Greenland security deal with Denmark

In a statement on his Truth Social network, US President Donald Trump claimed that the United States and Denmark had struck a deal granting Washington permanent control over Greenland's security, barring Russia and China from establishing bases in the Arctic territory. Trump said the so-called "Infinite Life" Agreement would prevent adversaries from having a military presence or making sensitive investments in Greenland without express approval from the US.

He emphasized that the deal guarantees China and Russia cannot have a base in Greenland or send troops there, with mechanisms in place to prevent sensitive sector investments. Greenland's Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, stated the deal strengthens the territory's security, while NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte hailed it as a good agreement for NATO and Europe.

However, the terms of the deal remain vague, and it was unclear if it was linked to or substantially different from a similar purported agreement with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the Davos economic forum. The agreement builds upon a 1951 defense pact, which allows Washington to ramp up troop deployments and military installations in Greenland upon informing Denmark and Greenland in advance.
