Trump accuses CNN, Politico, MS NOW of ‘fake news,’ bans them from White House

President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he intends to ban journalists from three news organizations, including POLITICO, from entering the White House. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, "Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America."

He also vowed to block CNN and MS NOW from sending reporters to the White House. This represents the latest stage in Trump's ongoing conflict with the media. Trump claimed that he was taking these actions "as a result of their constant 'reporting' FAKE NEWS!"

In response, POLITICO affirmed its commitment to reporting on the White House truthfully and defended its First Amendment rights against any efforts to restrict its reporting. Similarly, CNN pledged to continue providing fair and accurate coverage of the administration, emphasizing its constitutional right to do so without interference from the government. MS NOW did not comment on the matter.

Trump did not provide further details on the reasons behind his decision to ban these media outlets, stating only that their reporting was "fake news" and that it was due to "cumulative stories." The ban follows a pattern of Trump's attempts to limit journalists' access to the White House, such as when the administration blocked The Associated Press from the Oval Office and Air Force One following a dispute over the name of the Gulf of Mexico in 2025.

The White House had also barred reporters from a West Wing office used by communications staff and taken control of the management of the White House pool rotation in early 2025.

The White House Correspondents' Association criticized Trump's move, noting that the Constitution protects the freedom of the press from government interference. Similarly, New York Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger called Trump the most "hostile" president to the press in modern history. In September of the previous year, Trump filed a $15 billion lawsuit against the Times, which was later dismissed by a judge.

He subsequently refiled the suit in August. The claims that POLITICO received government subsidies from the White House during Trump's administration were debunked, as POLITICO stated.
