Todd McLellan Drops Major Nate Danielson Roster Revelation

Nate Danielson, once a first-round pick of the Detroit Red Wings, was not just battling for a roster spot during their prior training camp. Head coach Todd McLellan revealed that Danielson seemed to have already earned a place on the team before an injury intervened. According to Detroit Hockey Now, a wrist injury forced Danielson to start the NHL season in Grand Rapids after recovering from his camp.

He eventually joined the Red Wings in November, contributing two goals and five assists over 27 games. Danielson later suffered a stress fracture, which ended his season in February. Now back to full health, the center has the chance to capitalize on his opportunity. However, simply playing defensively may not be sufficient this time around.

McLellan believes Danielson must learn when to be more assertive and create more offensive opportunities. While he is already known for his defensive awareness, coaches trust his positioning and decision-making. The challenge now is to balance responsibility with aggression. Danielson himself acknowledged the need to improve his finishing skills.

"Finishing is definitely one thing that I kind of need to bear down on," he said, reflecting on his performance last year. Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff made it clear that Detroit is not planning another rebuild and requires young players who can contribute immediately, especially in the middle of the ice. McLellan is confident that Danielson is more equipped to compete for a permanent role after a year of physical and professional growth.

Danielson must now prove that he can not only avoid mistakes but also help create the plays that can win games.
