Thai Navy picks Hanwha Ocean of South Korea for 16.73 billion baht frigate

The Royal Thai Navy has chosen South Korean company Hanwha Ocean to construct a new frigate worth 16.73 billion baht (approximately US$496 million), according to a press conference held on Friday, September 18, at the navy auditorium. Admiral Pairoj Fueangchan, the navy commander-in-chief, made the announcement. The contract encompasses the frigate, onboard systems, equipment, spare parts, documentation, logistical support, training, and warranties, all within the 17 billion baht (around US$504 million) budget ceiling.

This acquisition aligns with the navy's long-term force development plan outlined in its white paper. The new vessel aims to replace aging ships slated for retirement in the coming years and will carry out duties such as protecting territorial waters, shipping routes, economic zones, and energy resources. It will also be capable of surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, air defense, attacking land targets, and countering drones.

The requirements for the ship were determined based on these missions and anticipated threats, rather than being tailored to a specific company or design. The navy invited 11 shipyards and organizations from various countries to submit proposals based on the terms of reference.
