Telangana High Court awards one-month jail term to police officer in contempt case

The Telangana High Court imposed a one-month jail sentence on police officer A. Krishnaiah for contempt of court on April 21. The officer, who was serving as L.B. Nagar Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of Malkajgiri commissionerate, was found guilty of arresting a petitioner in a dowry death case despite a protection order issued by the High Court.

The judge also fined Krishnaiah ₹2,000. The contempt petition was filed by Katta Vamshi Krishna, who claimed he was arrested in violation of the court's protection order. The high court had previously ordered Krishnaiah not to arrest the petitioner on April 21 and extended the order on April 27. However, Krishnaiah, the investigating officer, arrested the petitioner on April 28, leading to his rejection of remand by the local court.

The judge emphasized that the officer had a duty to verify whether the protection order was still in effect.
