Suicide blast at Pakistan police compound: Death toll mounts to 31

A suicide attack at a police compound in north-western Pakistan has left 31 dead, according to AFP news agency. The incident occurred on Friday when a car packed with explosives was driven into the facility as officers and their families prayed at a mosque within the compound. Around 80 people, primarily police personnel, were rushed to the hospital following the blast, with several in critical condition, raising concerns about further casualties. The exact number of civilian casualties remains unknown.

The attacker drove the explosives-laden vehicle into the mosque's entrance wall around noon, causing part of the building to collapse and leaving thick smoke and debris in the area. Authorities suspect that three to five gunmen, along with the suicide bomber, may have attempted to gain entry into the compound. Eye-witnesses reported gunshots as the attackers tried to force their way inside.

Among those killed were an SP-rank officer, a deputy SP, and three inspectors from the Counter-Terrorism Department, as per sources. Videos shared on social media depicted significant damage at the site, with people fleeing as thick smoke rose from the building. While no militant group has officially claimed responsibility by late Friday, suspicion has fallen on Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan, a coalition of three militant groups active in the region.

Inqilabi Islami Pakistan, which is linked to al-Qaida in the Indian subcontinent, also claimed responsibility via Telegram.

Rescue teams continued to clear the site and search for victims following the attack, while authorities evaluated the complete extent of the casualties.
