Antonio Guterres, the UN secretary-general, recently called for coordinated international action to tackle the risks associated with rapidly advancing AI technology. While national efforts are deemed crucial, Guterres emphasized the indispensable role of global coordination in addressing these concerns.

Recent weeks have seen a surge in apprehensions about AI safety, fueled by resignations from workers at prominent AI firms expressing alarm over the technology's dangers. Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, recently penned an essay advocating for caution, urging a slowdown in the pace of AI model improvements. Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis have all voiced support for this notion, with Hassabis himself calling for a US-led global regulatory framework for AI technology.

In contrast, President Donald Trump has dismissed warnings about AI risks as a "hoax" and resisted calls for stricter oversight of the rapidly evolving technology.
