Russian attacks kill four people in Balakliia

On September 18, four individuals lost their lives in Russian attacks on the city of Balakliia, located in Kharkiv Oblast, Ukraine. In response, local authorities declared September 19 a day of mourning. The chief of the Balakliia City Military Administration, Vitalii Karabanov, announced the mourning period on Telegram on September 19.

The attacks consisted of two strikes by Russian forces on the evening of September 18. The first attack targeted one of Balakliia's residential districts, resulting in the deaths of two people and causing injuries to others. Subsequently, a Russian attack drone struck a private residence, trapping an elderly couple beneath the rubble. Ukraine's State Emergency Service confirmed the recovery of the bodies of a 74-year-old man and a 71-year-old woman, increasing the death toll from the attacks to four.

In addition to the fatalities, three women aged 56, 58, and 80 were wounded in the attacks. The identities of the other two men killed, aged 60 and 55, were identified by Kharkiv Oblast authorities. State flags were ordered to be lowered at government and organization buildings across Balakliia to honor the victims.

The attacks on Balakliia occurred alongside a large-scale aerial assault by Russia on Ukraine overnight into September 19. Russia launched two Zircon anti-ship missiles and 174 drones of various types. Ukraine's Air Force reported on Telegram that the drone force included Shahed attack drones, Gerbera drones, Banderol/Dan-T loitering munitions, and Parodiya decoy drones.

The Zircon missiles were launched from Kursk Oblast, while the drones approached from Oryol, Millerovo, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, Russian-occupied Donetsk, and Hvardiiske in Crimean-occupied territories. Ukraine's air defenses managed to intercept or neutralize 141 aerial targets, including three Banderol/Dan-T munitions and 138 Shahed, Gerbera, and other drones.

However, the two Zircon missiles failed to reach their targets. Russian aerial weapons struck 15 locations, while debris from intercepted targets fell at nine additional sites. Odesa and Kyiv oblasts were the primary targets of the overnight Russian attack.
