Putin accuses Ukraine of interfering in Russian parliamentary election

Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of obstructing peace talks and interfering in Russia's parliamentary election during a meeting with Russia's Military-Industrial commission on Friday. Putin emphasized that Moscow's primary defense strategy remains its nuclear triad of land, sea, and air-based weapons, while also calling for improvements in anti-missile defense systems.

The Russian leader suggested that Ukraine's government has effectively become a dictatorship, citing the absence of a new presidential election despite the expiration of President Volodymyr Zelensky's term. Putin alleged that Ukraine is deliberately delaying elections and attempting to interfere with Russia's own election. Ukraine maintains that no election can be held in the country while a state of emergency following Russia's 2022 invasion persists, and they describe Russia's vote as a "pseudo-election" with the outcome predetermined.

Voters cast ballots in Russia's parliamentary election on Friday, with Putin asserting that the results will demonstrate strong public support for his military campaign in Ukraine. The Kremlin intends to use the election results as proof of widespread backing for Putin's policies, particularly his leadership during the ongoing conflict, now in its fifth year.

Putin criticized Ukraine for its strikes on Russian targets, claiming that such actions demonstrate a lack of sincerity in negotiations. He specifically cited a recent Ukrainian strike that killed the head of a local election commission in a village within Russia-occupied Zaporizhzhia, posthumously awarding the individual a Russian state honor.

Putin emphasized that such crimes aim to prevent any possibility of peace or negotiations. In additional remarks to the commission, Putin reiterated Russia's commitment to maintaining its nuclear triad while also prioritizing advancements in air defense capabilities. Ukraine has rapidly expanded its drone capabilities, launching strikes against Russian industrial targets up to 1,800 miles from its border, which has disrupted fuel supplies and other facets of Russian daily life.
