Rukun Negara, Royal Institution video triggers call for broad legal probe

National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang has called for a comprehensive legal probe into a viral theatre performance allegedly insulting the royal institution. Police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) have been urged to investigate the matter, with investigators tasked to consider relevant laws including the Penal Code, Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, Sedition Act 1948 and other applicable statutes.

Aaron emphasized that while freedom of expression is upheld in Malaysia, it must be exercised responsibly to respect laws, national institutions and social harmony. The Rukun Negara, the national ideology, serves as a guide in maintaining unity among Malaysians. Aaron criticized the theatrical performance for its irresponsible, excessive and unacceptable content, stating that freedom of artistic expression should not be used to belittle national institutions, provoke the public or threaten social harmony.

He urged all parties to use their freedom responsibly, and called for a public apology from the organizers and a thorough investigation by the authorities. Dr Zulkifli Hasan, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), echoed the call for a comprehensive investigation and legal action against anyone found guilty of insulting the country's foundations. He stressed that the arts should promote unity and not divide the plural society of Malaysia.
