Rebel Wilsons Girl Group is one of the worst movies ever made

Rebel Wilson's latest film, Girl Group, is widely considered one of the worst movies ever made. Written, directed, produced, and starring Wilson herself, this 96-minute attempt at a comedy is a convoluted mashup of Pitch Perfect, The Mighty Ducks, and The House Bunny, but only succeeds in being painfully awful. Wilson plays Tassie Young, a washed-up ex-girl group star who is forced to mentor a group of teenage girls aspiring to pop stardom.

The film's convoluted and rapid backstory, set up in an unconvincing hasty first act, follows Tassie's decline from a successful band member to partying and anonymity, only to be thrust back into the spotlight when the band announces a reunion tour. Despite Wilson's best efforts to add humor and musical numbers, Girl Group falls flat in both its pacing and comedic execution.

The film is littered with buzzwords, haphazard pop culture references, crude jokes, and pitiable wordplay that ultimately drag the movie down. However, amidst the mess, there are some redeeming elements such as the impressive array of talented performers in the girl groups, including Chabely Ponce, Daniela Couso, and Miracle Washington.

The real star of the movie, though, is Jamie-Lee O Donnell, who plays a rival mentor named Miss Candy. O Donnell brings focus, perspective, and sharp comedic timing to her role, making her performance a stark contrast to Wilson's cringe-worthy approach. Despite these few bright spots, Girl Group is an ugly, soulless mess that fails to entertain or engage its audience.
