PS Omollo Calls for Greater Investment in Education to Bridge Rural-Urban Gap

Siaya County's Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has emphasized the need for increased investment in education to narrow the disparity between students from rural and urban areas. During a fundraising event for Gagra Secondary School in Rarieda Constituency, hosted by Kenya National Union of Teachers' Secretary General Collins Oyuu, Omollo stressed that providing better learning conditions is essential to enabling rural children to compete with their urban counterparts.

He highlighted education's role in transforming young lives and driving community development, urging leaders, parents, and residents to back schools by upgrading infrastructure and ensuring favorable learning environments.

Omollo noted that bridging the gap between rural and urban children would offer the same opportunities for higher education and global competitiveness, even for those born and raised in villages. While acknowledging the government's efforts in education, including teacher recruitment and infrastructure development, he stressed the necessity for additional support to enhance learning conditions.

He called upon communities and stakeholders to supplement government initiatives by backing schools whenever possible. Omollo challenged Rarieda residents to restore the area's reputation as a source of scholars and professionals, asserting that education could aid in reshaping the region's future. "You have an opportunity under the leadership of President William Ruto to rewrite that history," he said.

Moreover, Omollo appealed to parents and guardians to ensure their children attend school and take advantage of educational opportunities. He emphasized that the development of schools should involve the community, not just the government, by improving infrastructure and supporting learners. Oyuu, who has served as KNUT Secretary General since 2021, secured re-election for a second term in April 2026.
