Postponement not an option as Kenya races to be ready for Afcon 2027

African football chief Patrice Motsepe has urged Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to accelerate preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) to be held in East Africa for the first time in 51 years. The tournament will take place from June 19 to July 17, with stadiums required to be tested around three months prior. Caf president Motsepe emphasized the need for "world class" facilities, including stadiums, hotels, roads and football pitches, stating there is "no consideration of a postponement" due to the high commitment level.

Despite some progress, challenges remain, particularly at the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, which is set to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships and the Afcon final. The stadium's playing surface is yet to be laid, while work is needed on cabling, floodlights and sky boxes. Kenya's cabinet secretary for sports, Salim Mvurya, assured Caf and Kenyans that preparations will be completed on time, aiming to conclude by December for test matches.

Previous African tournament delays, including the Women's Afcon and the 2024 African Nations Championship, highlight the challenges faced in scheduling these events. Motsepe reiterated the lack of alternative plans, emphasizing the significance of Afcon as part of Kenya's broader sporting legacy and economic transformation.
