Postponement not an option as Kenya races to be ready for Afcon 2027

African football chief Patrice Motsepe has urged heightened urgency from co-hosts Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon). The tournament will return to East Africa for the first time in 51 years, with the opening match set for 19 June and the final on 17 July. Caf president Motsepe emphasized that there is little room for delay, stating that stadiums must be tested and improved upon starting in January.

While progress has been made, some facilities remain below required standards, including the playing surface at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi, which is yet to be laid. Motsepe also highlighted security concerns related to VIP guests, including heads of state, that may require revisions to the original stadium plans. Despite delays, Motsepe insisted there is no consideration of postponing the event, citing deep commitment from all parties involved.

Kenya's sports cabinet secretary, Salim Mvurya, assured Caf and Kenyans that preparations will be completed on time, aiming to have test matches concluded by December to allow for further inspections. Motsepe's final assessment visit is scheduled for January, with the next three months deemed crucial for the successful execution of Afcon 2027, which is now intertwined with Kenya's bid for the 2029 World Athletics Championships.
