Piyush Desai (1939-2026): An industry veteran who believed ‘tea can dissolve differences’

Piyush Desai, the Chairman of Ahmedabad-based Wagh Bakri Tea Group, passed away at the age of 86 on September 15, 2026. Born into a family with deep roots in India's tea industry, Desai's story began with his grandfather Narandas Desai, who established a tea estate in Durban in 1892 and later founded the Gujarat Tea Depot in Ahmedabad. Under Piyush's leadership, Wagh Bakri became known for its commitment to quality, integrity, and collective growth, all while promoting the idea that "tea can dissolve differences."

Desai's philanthropic spirit was evident throughout his life. In 1984, he donated Rs 1.51 lakh to the Blind People's Association (BPA) after his brothers and him realized the university they had visited was closed with no guidance. During the 2001 earthquake in Kutch, he contributed Rs 15 lakh to help rehabilitate victims with physical disabilities.

Following communal riots in 2002, Desai emerged as a lone voice among corporate leaders, speaking out against discrimination and leading relief efforts for those affected. His philanthropy extended beyond monetary contributions; he served as BPA President from 2014 to 2020 and invited Punani, an IIM-A alumnus, to join the Wagh Bakri board.

Desai's impact on the tea industry was significant. Under his tenure, the company expanded its presence to over 66 countries and held a nearly 9% share in India's tea market. Known for his commitment to quality and integrity, Desai also served as Vice President of Sadvichar Parivar and was a member of the Gujarat Tea Traders Association and Federation of All India Tea Traders Associations.

Recognized for his expertise, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Northeastern Tea Association in 2023. Desai's legacy will endure through the business he helped build and the values of quality, integrity, and collective growth that he championed.
