Nigerians will witness drop in transportation costs from October 1, Tinubu insists

President Bola Tinubu has called on state governments to ensure that the cost savings from using cheaper CNG-powered transportation trickles down to lower fares for Nigerian citizens by October 1. This instruction came in a statement from Tinubu following his meeting with 36 state governors on August 27, where the goal was agreed upon to achieve measurable reductions in transportation costs from October 1.

Tinubu urged states to work with transport unions, support the conversion of vehicles, and facilitate required infrastructure, making sure that the savings reached citizens through lower fares. Several states like Borno, Kaduna, Kaduna, and others have already reported reductions in transport fares through CNG-powered and electric buses.

For instance, in Kaduna, 100 CNG-powered buses provided free transport on major routes, carrying 3.2 million passengers in their first year, and saving commuters over N3.5bn in transport costs. Tinubu emphasized that Nigeria, being a gas-rich country, could reduce its exposure to global energy price shocks by increasing the use of alternative energy for transportation.
