Najib’s house arrest: Not a get-out-of-jail free card — Hafiz Hassan

KUALA LUMPUR: The house arrest arrangement for ex-PM Datuk Seri Najib Razak may reignite his political influence and bolster sections of Umno's grassroots, according to analysts. This move could revive the "Bossku" sentiment and reassert Najib as a symbol and rallying point for traditional supporters, they said. However, experts cautioned that the political impact would not be uniform and could generate fresh challenges for the unity government.

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia's Dr Mazlan Ali noted that Najib's return could provide psychological relief to supporters who view his imprisonment as a political grievance. The decision could inject renewed energy into Umno, allowing it to focus on strengthening its organisation and preparing for the next election. However, Dr Mazlan cautioned that this morale boost should not be mistaken for increased public support for Umno, as Najib's association with the 1MDB scandal and governance questions would still weigh heavily on some voters.

National Unity Advisory Council member and political analyst Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi said the decision could offer "moral and psychological relief" to Najib's core supporters and sections of Umno's grassroots. He suggested that Najib could regain greater influence as a political symbol and mobiliser, particularly among Malay voters who see him as a leader who delivered stability and assistance.

Dr Awang also warned that Umno must tread carefully, as it remains part of the unity government and should not appear to turn this into a political victory that could challenge the sensitivities of its Pakatan Harapan partners.
