Makran University resolution on new provinces opposed

Quetta, September 20th, 2026 - The Baloch Students Organisation (BSO) has expressed serious concerns over a resolution reportedly passed by the University of Makran in Panjgur that advocates for the creation of new provinces in Balochistan. A spokesperson for the group argued that such significant decisions regarding the region's political future cannot be made by a university administration or in secretive meetings with a select few.

The BSO questioned the university's authority to pass a resolution on a purely political matter, especially considering the strict limits on student political activities, organizational programs, and freedom of expression on university campuses. "If students are subjected to restrictions on political expression, the administration of the University of Makran, Panjgur, must explain under what authority it passed a resolution on the division of Balochistan," the spokesperson said, highlighting a perceived double standard.

The spokesperson emphasized that Balochistan is not just an administrative region but a homeland deeply connected to the history, identity, and collective existence of the Baloch people. Any decisions concerning the area should be made through democratic, constitutional processes, the spokesperson added. The BSO demanded that the university clarify the legal or institutional basis that empowers it to adopt the resolution.

Universities, the group asserted, are centers of education, research, and dialogue, and attempting to create a political justification for dividing Balochistan is outside their mandate.
