Le Pen, Bardella reject Moscow efforts to dictate French policy

French far-right National Rally leader Marine Le Pen and party president Jordan Bardella firmly rejected Moscow's efforts to dictate French policy, stating on September 19 that Russia cannot "directly or indirectly dictate French policy" through intimidation, threats, destabilization, or psychological pressure. They condemned Russia's hostile actions, emphasizing that no provocation, covert operation, or destabilizing activity would force France to aid Russia in its military objectives in Ukraine.

The duo also denounced Russia's move to place under state control the assets of European companies operating in Russia, including Nestlé and Auchan, deeming it a "hostile act" that undermines the interests and rights of European businesses. Le Pen and Bardella expressed support for measures to enhance the protection of France's strategic infrastructure, following French President Emmanuel Macron's directive for the government to develop a plan to counter Russian hybrid attacks.

With a worsening security situation, the politicians stressed the need for France to respond to hostile actions targeting its territory, infrastructure, strategic interests, or citizens. Le Pen, who is currently leading the presidential race, has faced criticism from opponents for her favorable stance toward Russia. She recently stated that France can no longer provide Ukraine with the same level of financial assistance due to its own difficulties, though she reiterated that this does not imply hostility toward Ukraine.

Bardella, who could become prime minister if Le Pen wins the 2027 election, has also advocated for a review of France's approach to supporting Ukraine, citing the U.S.'s "minerals deal" with Ukraine as an example. Le Pen announced her presidential candidacy for 2027 on July 7, maintaining her role as the main public figure of the National Rally, with Bardella serving as the party's official leader since November 2022.
