King’s College concession: Unity college teachers suspend strike

Teachers in Nigeria's 117 Federal Unity Colleges are set to resume classes following the ASCSN's suspension of their industrial action, triggered by the proposed 35-year concession of King's College, Lagos. The decision came after the Federal Ministry of Education and organized labour reached an agreement to halt the concession for two weeks, allowing a seven-member committee to scrutinize the matter and the concerns raised by the unions.

The ASCSN's secretary-general, Comrade Gamaliel Acho, disclosed the suspension during a press conference on Friday, September 17, 2026, emphasizing that it was the result of a reconciliatory meeting with the ministry and other labor unions on Thursday.

The industrial action, which had included the Joint Workers Committee of Unions (JWC), was sparked by the proposed concession of King's College and other grievances against the ministry. Acho clarified that the suspension was in line with a communiqué signed after the meeting, which put the proposed concession on hold to facilitate further consultation and review.

The seven-member committee, comprising representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education, organized labor, the King’s College Old Boys Association (KCOBA), and the Federal Ministry of Labour, is tasked with submitting its report and recommendations within two weeks. The union leader stated that the ASCSN had instructed its members to suspend the industrial action pending the committee's findings.

The agreement provides an opportunity for all parties to reassess the concession arrangement and address the concerns that led to the strike.
