Iraq lifts decade-long restriction on civilian use of military airspace

Iraq's Transport Ministry has lifted a decade-long restriction on civilian use of military airspace in the western part of the country, ending a policy that began in 2016. This decision brings an end to the designated zones, mainly located in the western parts of the nation, which were previously reserved for military operations against ISIS between 2016 and 2017. During that time, these areas were used as bases by international coalition forces carrying out operations in Iraq's western desert.

The airspace management team at the air operations centre in Iraq has officially confirmed that the military air zones listed in the country's aeronautical guide are no longer being utilized for military purposes. This move, announced on Friday, is expected to provide Iraqi aviation authorities with more flexibility to redesign flight routes, relax restrictions on aircraft movement, and enhance the overall efficiency of airspace utilization.

Ehab Saad Karim, the director of the General Company for Airports and Air Navigation Management, highlighted the significance of this development, stating that Iraq's strategic location presents a unique opportunity for global airlines to leverage its airspace. He also mentioned that the national carrier, Iraqi Airways, has been subject to EU restrictions since 2015 due to security and safety concerns.

Karim emphasized that the complete reopening of the airspace was a result of years of technical and institutional efforts focused on improving air traffic efficiency and flow.

The decision to fully reopen the airspace comes ahead of the September 30 deadline for the US-led international coalition to fully withdraw from Iraq. Karim noted that the reopening of these routes is a part of broader measures and arrangements in place for the departure of foreign troops.
