Iraq lifts decade-long restriction on civilian use of military airspace

Iraq's Transport Ministry has lifted a decade-long restriction on civilian use of military airspace in the western part of the country, ending limitations that were in place since 2016. All previously reserved zones, primarily in the western regions, have been transferred to the authority overseeing airports and air navigation for utilization by civil aviation.

These areas were originally designated for military operations against ISIS during 2016 and 2017, when expansive parts of Iraq's western desert served as bases for coalition forces' actions.

Ehab Saad Karim, director of the General Company for Airports and Air Navigation Management, confirmed the military air zones listed in the Iraqi aeronautical guide are no longer utilized for military purposes. This development is anticipated to provide Iraqi aviation authorities with enhanced flexibility to redesign flight routes, alleviate restrictions on aircraft movement, and enhance airspace utilization efficiency.

The decision is influenced by persistent security concerns over the past decade, which have hampered the full utilization of Iraqi airspace.

Karim emphasized that Iraq's strategic position will present opportunities for global airlines to leverage its airspace. The national carrier, Iraqi Airways, has been subject to EU sanctions since 2015 due to security and safety issues. The complete reopening of airspace is the result of years of technical and institutional efforts aimed at enhancing air traffic efficiency and flow.

This move will contribute to revenue generation, improve the flow of civilian air traffic, and bolster the national economy. The decision is being implemented ahead of the September 30 deadline for the US-led international coalition to conclude its withdrawal from Iraq, aligning with measures and arrangements for the departure of foreign troops.
