The Electric Loco Shed (ELS) based in Kanpur, under the North Central Railway (NCR), has introduced an industrial Rotary Desiccant Dehumidifier in electric locomotive number 44061.

The device's purpose is to maintain dry air within the locomotive's traction converter area, shielding critical electronic and electrical parts from potential damage.

The primary concern arises due to the presence of moisture in the air, which can negatively impact the performance of electrical and electronic equipment, especially during the monsoon when humidity levels soar. Moisture can result in corrosion and oxidation of electronic cards, connectors, and metal contacts. Additionally, it can cause dust and dirt to adhere to these components, thereby increasing the risk of electrical leakage and short circuits.

The dehumidifier is anticipated to create a drier atmosphere for these components, thereby decreasing the likelihood of moisture-related failures, as stated by CPRO Sharma. The device has been procured at a cost of Rs 2.49 lakh and is situated inside the machine room of the locomotive, according to the official.
