Greenland, Denmark say Trump deal won't compromise sovereignty

COPENHAGEN — Denmark and Greenland announced on Saturday that any agreement with the United States would not undermine Greenland's sovereignty, following President Donald Trump's statement that the deal would grant Washington permanent control over the Arctic island's security, leaving the specifics uncertain. On Friday, the United States, Denmark, and Greenland declared they had reached an agreement for the U.S. to develop a substantial military presence on Greenland, while simultaneously preventing U.S. adversaries from establishing their own bases on the island.

The agreement's specifics, such as the scale of the U.S. military presence in the self-governing Danish territory and whether Washington would have any formal authority over foreign policy and resources, remain undisclosed. Denmark and Greenland expressed optimism that the deal, expected to be formalized during the UN General Assembly next week, would resolve months of uncertainty sparked by Trump's threats to assume control of Greenland.

Next week could prove a favorable one for Greenland, Denmark, and the United States, remarked Denmark's Foreign Minister Lars Lokke.
