Gov’t delivers milk coolers to Murang’a Dairy cooperatives, urges fair pay for farmers

The Kenyan government has provided 12 bulk milk coolers to dairy cooperatives in Murang'a County, a move anticipated to benefit over 18,500 farmers and reduce post-harvest milk losses. The handover ceremony took place at the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization's (KALRO) Seeds Head Office in Gatanga. These coolers will be instrumental in aggregating 37,000 liters of milk daily.

During the event, Principal Secretary for Livestock Development Jonathan Mueke expressed that the government's aim is to increase milk production, bolster the dairy sector, and ensure farmers reap more profits. Mueke emphasized that the government remains committed to supporting dairy farmers through investments that improve production, minimize losses, and enhance market access.

Already, 230 coolers delivered under the initiative have made a significant difference in curbing losses. Following a recent directive from the President, the government plans to distribute a total of 650 more coolers by January 2027.

At the event, Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome, Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah, Kangema MP Peter Kihungi, Nominated Senator Veronica Maina, Dina Muthoni and other leaders were present. PS Mueke urged dairy cooperatives to prioritize farmers by ensuring they receive fair and reliable returns for their milk. He asserted that fair pay is crucial in tackling the current milk shortage, as undervalued farmers produce less and contribute to market shortages.

Mueke emphasized that fair prices assist farmers in affording quality feed, particularly during dry seasons, which maintains production levels and ensures a steady supply of milk to the formal market and consumers. "I urge cooperatives to work closely with farmers to maintain steady milk production and bring back milk to our shelves," he said.
