Flawed AI-linked intelligence report almost led to US military boarding Chinese ship in Middle East – report

Earlier this year, the US military came dangerously close to boarding a Chinese vessel in the Middle East, according to a CNN report. The incident, which CNN obtained through four anonymous sources familiar with the situation, involved an intelligence report that falsely indicated the ship was carrying components related to nuclear weapons.

This led American forces to prepare for an interception of the vessel. However, the operation was aborted after officials discovered that an AI chatbot used by an analyst had misrepresented the cargo on board. CNN quoted a source as stating that the intelligence report was "entirely false" but added that it "almost started a war."

The report did not provide details on the actual contents of the ship or its destination. US Central Command, responsible for American forces in the Middle East, declined to comment on the reported incident at the time of the article's publication. This comes amidst growing concerns over the potential dangers of artificial intelligence, with a researcher from the leading AI firm Anthropic resigning following worries about the technology's potential to escape human control, and another Anthropic employee expressing fears that AI could result in the extinction of humanity within the next decade.

Despite these warnings, US President Donald Trump and some of his key allies have resisted efforts to significantly limit the development of artificial intelligence. In a separate incident involving the US military and China, Politico reported that F-35 jet parts, including a sensitive stealth canopy for a cockpit, had been diverted to Hong Kong and are now missing.

The parts were en route from Australia to the United States for repairs when the diversion occurred, raising concerns that Beijing had obtained sensitive American military technology. A spokesperson for Lockheed Martin, which manages the F-35 supply chain, stated that the company could not disclose specific shipment details due to security reasons but assured that the company adheres to all US regulations, including those established by the Department of War and monitored by the Defense Logistics Agency.
