CPCR opposes MPs serving as ministers under Constitution Review proposals

The Citizens’ Platform on Constitutional Reforms (CPCR) has maintained its stance against the ongoing practice of Members of Parliament (MPs) serving as ministers, according to a recent statement by Professor Akosua Darkwah. Speaking at a press briefing, Darkwah expressed the Platform's disagreement with proposals allowing MPs to simultaneously hold ministerial, deputy ministerial, and regional ministerial positions.

While supporting Parliament, the CPCR believes lawmakers should be constitutionally barred from serving on the governing boards, councils, and procurement committees of publicly funded institutions. Strengthening Parliament's independence is crucial for enhancing checks and balances within Ghana's constitutional framework and deepening democratic accountability, Darkwah argued.

The focus of constitutional reforms should be on creating stronger, more independent institutions that can function effectively regardless of the political party in power.
