Chilling 911 call played at jury trial for Ajax man charged with girlfriend’s murder

In an Oshawa courtroom on Friday, the chilling 911 call made from Kyle Severin's phone on the night of March 30, 2024, was played for the jury in the trial of the Ajax man charged with his girlfriend's murder. Severin, sounding frantic, told the call-taker he was at 14 Hillman Dr. and that his girlfriend, Jennifer Polak, was dead in the bedroom, with a group of men in his house.

The caller also mentioned blood everywhere and stated that he was afraid to turn on the lights due to fear of being shot. Text exchanges between the couple dating back to February 2023 were also presented in court. Severin accused Polak of cheating on him, while Polak expressed love for him, concern over his drinking, and threats to leave him if he threatened her again.

The Crown prosecutor, Julie O'Connor, stated in her opening remarks that Polak and Severin had been in a relationship for years and that she frequently visited him at his basement apartment on Hillman Drive. Upon arrival at the scene, officers found Severin, covered in blood, outside his bedroom where Polak's body was discovered.

O'Connor revealed that Polak had been severely beaten and her throat slit, and that two knives with blood and DNA from both individuals were found in the bedroom. Drug paraphernalia, including what appeared to be a makeshift bong, was also discovered, with cocaine residue later identified. The prosecutor emphasized that the evidence would demonstrate Polak's concerns about Severin's mental health and substance abuse, noting that she had expressed her fears to Severin's mother and Severin himself.

On the night of the murder, Severin texted Polak, expressing concern about their lack of intimacy, to which Polak responded that she was stressed about his behavior, drug use, and well-being. The Crown attorney stated that they would prove Severin's responsibility for Polak's injuries causing her death and that his actions were deliberate and intentional.
