Canada hopeful of India trade deal by year-end

Canadian officials are optimistic about finalizing a comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) with India by the end of the year, according to Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu. Prime Minister Mark Carney had previously expressed similar hopes during a visit to New Delhi in March. Sidhu expressed confidence during an interview in Mumbai, stating, "I'm feeling very, very optimistic and energetic that we can get it done in the coming months."

Negotiations are expected to include discussions on the energy sector, with Canada's liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports and five ongoing projects presenting opportunities for Indian firms. Sidhu emphasized the potential for Canadian companies to secure supply and invest in these projects, as well as the mutual interest in expanding cooperation in nuclear energy, where India aims to significantly increase its capacity.

Several major Indian businesses, including Reliance Industries, Mahindra and Mahindra, and the JSW Group, are actively exploring investments in Canadian critical mineral projects to secure their supply chains. Sidhu did not provide further details on these talks.
