50 years on, these La Salle schoolmates are still showing up

Fifty years after graduating from La Salle Brickfields in Kuala Lumpur, members of the Class of 1976 have reunited for their golden reunion on Malaysia Day. The reunion took place at La Salle Hall in Section 5, marking a half-century since the boys were in Form Three. Organiser Basil Sylvester Francis explained that the date was chosen due to the public holiday, but also held sentimental value as it evoked memories of their school days, including singing Malaysia's national anthem, Negaraku.

Out of the 200+ students who made up the Blue, Red, Green, and Yellow classes in 1976, 23 have since passed away. Francis noted that many of the reunion attendees now face financial struggles and health issues, but the event provides a much-needed boost of camaraderie. Sukumar Krishnan, the organising committee chairman, said that every reunion is a bonus for them to be alive and renew their acquaintances.

The old boys have also continued the Lasallian tradition of service, with the "Brother for Brother" fund assisting former schoolmates in need. Bahaman Mohamad Noor, who represented Malaysia in rugby, remembered the strong bond they shared as a diverse group of students from different ethnic and religious backgrounds, likening it to "growing up in a colourful Malaysian environment."

Former school judo champion Lawrence Yong, lawyer John Ng, and Rev Fr Patrick Boudville are among the notable alumni who attended the reunion.
