37 miners’ deaths: ‘We must strengthen regulation of artisanal mining’ — Kebbi gov

In a somber statement, the Kebbi State Government has called for enhanced mining regulations and stricter adherence to safety protocols in light of the tragic loss of 37 miners, some believed to be minors, under the supervision of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State. Governor Nasir Idris conveyed his condolences to the Niger State Government and the families of the deceased in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ahmed Idris.

The governor expressed profound sympathy to Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, the grieving families, and the populace of the state following the unfortunate incident. Idris emphasized that the tragic deaths underscore the urgent need to fortify the regulation of artisanal mining and enforce stringent safety standards to safeguard the lives of those involved in mining operations.

The Kebbi State Government pledged to work hand in hand with its neighboring Niger State counterparts to champion safer mining practices, increase public awareness, and provide alternative livelihood options for young individuals residing in communities straddling the shared border between the two states. The governor requested divine peace for the departed souls and the fortitude for their families to cope with the unbearable loss.

Additionally, Idris ordered relevant authorities within Kebbi State to observe a moment of solemn contemplation and render special prayers for the victims.
