Wa East MP supports over 200 BECE graduates with GH¢200,000 cash support as poor pass rates spark concern

More than 200 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates in the Wa East District have received direct financial assistance totalling over GH¢200,000 from Dr Godfred Seidu Jasaw, the Member of Parliament for the area. Each qualifying student received GH¢1,000 during a gathering in Bulenga to help parents prepare their children for high school.

Dr Jasaw explained that cash grants were chosen over traditional supplies due to the district's high levels of poverty. He emphasized that the money would enable families to address their most pressing needs, such as purchasing uniforms, books, or food. Despite his intervention, Dr Jasaw expressed dissatisfaction with the district's academic performance, noting that the best aggregate recorded this year was 22.

He initially intended the bursary to be merit-based but widened the eligibility to aggregate 35 due to low performance. The District Chief Executive supported the initiative but urged responsible use of the funds. Beneficiary students expressed gratitude for the support, with one student promising to work hard in secondary school.
