Voting begins in Russia’s parliamentary election

Russian President Vladimir Putin inaugurated a three-day parliamentary election in Russia on Friday, framing it as a gauge of support for the nation's war in Ukraine. This marks the first parliamentary election since Russia escalated its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The vote, which determines the composition of the 450-seat lower house of parliament, the State Duma, is anticipated to solidify the ruling pro-Putin United Russia party's dominance within the tightly controlled political landscape.

Anti-war candidates have largely been disallowed from the ballot following a Supreme Court ruling that the liberal Yabloko party, advocating for a ceasefire, violated electoral rules, although some Yabloko candidates continue to contest in individual constituencies.

In a nationwide televised address, Putin emphasized that casting a vote would bolster Russia's victory in Ukraine and underscore national resolve amidst external pressures. The Kremlin stresses the importance of national unity due to perceived mounting threats from Ukraine's intelligence services and other adversaries attempting to incite domestic unrest.

The election is occurring amid growing concerns among some Russians regarding the conflict's impact on the economy, which is under strain due to fuel shortages resulting from Ukrainian drone strikes, soaring interest rates, a labor shortage, and Western sanctions. Preliminary and partial election results are projected to emerge around 6 PM on Sunday, with comprehensive outcomes becoming available on Monday.
