‘Vibe coding is not going away’: AWS’ Darko Mesaroš on AI and the future of coding

Darko Mesaroš, AWS' Distinguished Developer Advocate, believes that the concept of 'vibe coding' is not fading away. Instead, he encourages developers to adopt a more disciplined approach known as spec-driven development. As AI continues to reshape the software development landscape, Mesaroš predicts that developers will need to expand their skill sets beyond just coding.

During his recent visit to India, Mesaroš discussed the growing influence of AI on coding and AWS's efforts to bolster the country's developer ecosystem. Kiro, an AI-powered coding tool from AWS, enables developers to focus on defining requirements and design decisions before generating code. Mesaroš sees this as a complement to 'vibe coding', which he views as a valuable way to explore, prototype, and experiment with new ideas.

While AI agents can write code, Mesaroš emphasizes that developers must still understand their customer base, systems design, scaling, and operations. He warns against the limitations of AI tools, particularly the lack of persistent context across sessions. AWS is investing heavily in India's developer community, with a global commitment of over $500 million towards student cloud and AI training.

Over 10 million people in India have participated in AWS training and certification programs, and the company has invested $21 billion in AI and cloud infrastructure in the region. Despite the rapid advancements in AI, Mesaroš remains confident that developers will continue to play a crucial role in shaping the future of software development.
