Verizon wants to kill landline phones in a matter of weeks

Verizon is reportedly seeking permission from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to phase out traditional copper landline service, signaling the end of an era for the aging communication technology. While no specific timeline has been disclosed, local news sources have suggested that customers may be notified by the end of November that their landline phone service could be discontinued.

The primary goal behind this move is to transition to more advanced fiber or wireless services, aiming to serve a larger customer base. However, the transition will not leave everyone behind, particularly in rural or remote areas where service may remain challenging. Verizon assures customers that they will receive ample notice before the switch to a modern, FCC-approved solution and that emergency services will still be accessible.

Moreover, customers should be able to retain their existing phone numbers during the transition. For those unable to adopt the new technology, Verizon has pledged to maintain landline service until an alternative is found. While this shift is framed as a modernization effort, it is also plausible that Verizon's decision is driven by financial considerations.
