Umno to launch fund to help Najib settle RM50mil fine

Umno, the Malaysian political party, intends to establish a fund to aid former Prime Minister Najib Razak in paying the RM50 million fine imposed upon him. This decision comes after the conditional pardon granted to Najib, enabling him to finish his prison term under house arrest until August 23, 2028. The fine, initially set at RM210 million, has been reduced to RM50 million.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed gratitude on behalf of the party, highlighting the significance of the decision for Najib, his family, and other Umno members who have been praying for his well-being. In a Facebook post, Zahid called upon all Umno leaders, members, and supporters to contribute to the fund voluntarily, ensuring transparency, systematization, and compliance with applicable rules and laws.

The legal affairs division of the Prime Minister's Department confirmed that Najib, 73, is currently serving a six-year sentence at Kajang prison, having had his original 12-year sentence halved by the Federal Territories Pardons Board in February 2024.
