Umno hopes Najib conditional pardon will boost momentum ahead of melaka polls

The Pardons Board recently decided to grant former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak a conditional pardon. This decision could provide a much-needed boost to the United Malays National Organisation (Umno), ahead of the upcoming Melaka state election. Umno's president, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, expressed hope that the development would have a positive impact on the party as it navigates the current political climate in Malaysia.

Speaking at a press conference following the fifth Halal 20 (H20) Summit, Zahid stated, "I hope this will add value to the current political landscape in our country."

Earlier, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, the King of Malaysia, granted Najib a conditional pardon. This arrangement will allow him to complete the remainder of his sentence under house arrest, with the condition that he pays a fine of RM50 million. The Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister's Department announced this decision at the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya.

As preparations for the state election progress, Zahid has granted Melaka Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh the authority to engage in discussions with any political coalition. The party will submit its list of candidates for consideration, with the selection process based on reports from various sources. Zahid emphasized that the party will adhere to the "WALI" principle, which stands for "winnable, acceptable and likeable" candidates.

This strategy aims to maximize the party's chances of success, as the current national trend of support for the opposition, beginning in Johor and Negeri Sembilan, is expected to continue.
