Ukraine-Krieg: Trump unterzeichnet Paket mit Sanktionen gegen Russland

U.S. President Donald Trump signed a package of new sanctions against Russia into law on Wednesday, according to the White House. The legislation, which enjoyed bipartisan support in Congress, aims to put additional pressure on the Kremlin amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. In addition to targeting Russian politicians and companies, the package includes restrictions on Russian oil and gas exports, which fund Moscow's military campaign.

Under the terms of the agreement, Trump is authorized to impose sanctions on the five largest purchasers of Russian energy resources, as well as the five countries that are most instrumental in helping Russia circumvent energy sanctions. This could strain U.S. trade relations with China and India, which rely heavily on Russian oil supplies. The legislation, named after the late Senator and Trump ally Lindsey Graham, also sets the stage for an extension of sanctions against Iran until 2031.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Trump for signing the bill, urging swift implementation of its provisions in a social media post. Selenskyj wrote that the best tribute to Graham's memory is the complete and rapid enforcement of the measures. He added that the best reward for those helping Ukraine in its fight against Russia's aggression would be peace.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded to Trump's signing, stating that further U.S. sanctions would complicate efforts towards a peaceful resolution in Ukraine.
