Uber ordered to pay $40m to family of woman killed after driver left her on highway

Uber has been compelled to pay $40 million (£29 million) to the family of Emily Normandin-Parker, a 23-year-old woman who tragically died on a California highway after being forcibly removed from her rideshare vehicle. On August 12, 2023, Emily had booked an Uber for herself and her friend, but her friend became ill and vomited in the car, according to court documents.

The driver, Vu Tran, allegedly pulled over and ordered the intoxicated women out of the vehicle. Emily was subsequently struck and killed by another vehicle. Uber argued that Tran was an independent contractor, and thus not liable for his actions. However, Judge Richard Stone ruled that the rideshare company must compensate the family, following a five-day arbitration process.

The family's attorney stated that after abandoning the women, Tran did not provide assistance and instead sought a cleaning fee from Uber. Judge Stone expressed concern over Tran's apparent concern for his new car over the passengers' welfare. Uber maintains that the arbitration panel erred in holding them legally accountable. The company has since enhanced its safety protocols, including guidelines urging drivers to avoid unsafe drop-offs.

The family had initially agreed to a settlement offering $10 million but rejected it, deeming it insufficient.
