U-20 WWC: Falconets thrash England 3-0 to reach quarter-finals

Nigeria’s U20 girls, the Falconets, delivered a commanding performance to eliminate England’s Young Lionesses and advance to the quarter-finals of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Poland. The match, held in Bielsko-Biała, marked the team's first appearance at the championship. Nigeria took the lead in the 8th minute through Tosin Rafiu, who displayed composure in front of goal to score the opening goal.

Despite England's efforts from Lily Dent, Princess Ademiluyi, and Rachel Maltby, the Nigerian defense held firm. A Video Assistant Referee review in the 33rd minute nearly altered the game's flow, but Nigeria's goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma made a crucial save to thwart Rachel Maltby's penalty attempt. Uzoma's defensive prowess was pivotal, with her making six significant saves in the first half.

The Falconets maintained their lead at halftime and extended their advantage in the second half. Just two minutes into the restart, Janet Akekoromowei doubled Nigeria's lead in the 47th minute with a precise strike, leaving England struggling to cope. Mary Mamudu, who came on as a substitute in the 61st minute, immediately influenced the game.

In the 73rd minute, Mamudu converted an assist from Precious Oscar to score Nigeria's third goal, effectively sealing the match. The Falconets will face the victor of Poland versus Colombia in the quarter-finals on Sunday at the Władyław Król Municipal Stadium in Łódź. After the game, team captain Aduku expressed satisfaction with the win, crediting the team's motivation and stating their determination to continue their winning streak against either Poland or Colombia.
