Trump ‘clearly’ wants dialogue with Pyongyang, says South Korean president

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung declared on Friday that it is evident that US President Donald Trump seeks engagement with North Korea, as the nuclear negotiations continue to stalemate. The South Korean leader emphasized his support for Trump's desire to engage in dialogue, urging Trump to do the same. According to Lee, Trump expressed last month his intention to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later this year, stating the importance of maintaining good relations with Kim, who reportedly possesses 57 highly potent nuclear weapons. However, North Korea has not publicly responded to Trump's outreach.

In response, Lee stated that South Korea is persistently carrying out preliminary talks to pave the way for dialogue between North Korea and the United States. He acknowledged that while a meeting remains challenging, it is not entirely out of the question. He emphasized that while the likelihood of a meeting is uncertain, every effort must be made to transform this potential into reality.
