Trump claims deal with Denmark gives US ‘permanent control’ over Greenland

President Donald Trump announced on Friday that the United States has reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland, granting Washington permanent control over the island's security. Mr. Trump emphasized in a post on Truth Social that the agreement would incur no costs to US taxpayers, describing it as "infinite life," "very important," and "historic."

In his directive, Mr. Trump stated that the agreement ensures the United States will have "FOREVER" the complete ability to secure and defend Greenland's security and that of the United States. The agreement prevents any US adversary from having a base, military presence, or making sensitive investments in Greenland without explicit US approval.

The National reported that the US and Denmark are set to formally sign the agreement at the UN General Assembly next week. Mr. Trump highlighted that while previous presidents recognized Greenland's strategic importance, none were able to address the situation. He expressed pride in being the president who permanently and conclusively resolved the matter.

Trump also announced that the US will immediately begin the development of a large military presence in Greenland. Since taking office last year, Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire to take over Greenland, citing its significance to US national security and its natural resources. His ambitions have drawn criticism from European allies, and in January, he stated he would not rule out military action to acquire Greenland, which has a population of 57,000.
